Hyderabad, February 21: Gandhi Hospital doctors had been done a shoulder replacement surgery successfully on 32-year-old and doctors of the sate-run hospital claim it to be first of its kind surgery performed at any government hospital till date.While coming to details, A daily wage labourer named as-Sadiq, who accidentally held a metal pipe through which live current was passing while trying to check an overhead water tank and sustained electric shock on January 15. He was then rushed to a nearby hospital which referred the case to Gandhi Hospital.After being admitted to Gandhi Hospital on January 17, the initial X-Ray showed that his shoulder was crushed and the impact of the electric shock was such that, he had a four-part fracture and dislocation of the shoulder."His condition was beyond reconstruction," said Dr.G Ramesh, Associate Professor of Orthopedics at GandhiThe doctors concluded that a shoulder hemiarthroplasty would have to be performed to save his hand. The patient had no means to procure the modular neers prosthesis costing Rs.78,000. "We immediately swung into action and arranged for the prosthesis, after we got the request from the Orthopaedic Unit at Gandhi," said Mujtaba Hasan Askari from Helping Hand foundation, which took care of the expenses incurred. The patient was operated by orthopaedic surgeons of Gandhi Hospital, comprising Dr.G Ramesh, Dr.Ashok Ohatker, Dr.Radhakrishna and Dr.Sudheer, under the guidance of Dr.Yalya HOD and Professor of Orthopedics at Gandhi Hospital on January 28.However, shoulder hemiarthroplasties are still nascent areas in Hyderabad said the Orthopedic Surgeons at Gandhi Hospital.Sadiq is now discharged and is undergoing physiotherapy to restore back his mobility said the orthopedic surgeons - Helping Hand Foundation will support him for his livelihood and physiotherapy for the next 3 to 6 months until he is back on his feet informed Askari.
