Supreme Court to hear Unnao rape case today

NEW DELHI: Supreme Court has sought a report from its Secretary-General on Wednesday taking cognisance of a letter written by The Unnao rape victim to Chief Justice Ranjan Gogoi and their point is why the letter was not brought to his notice from July 17.

In a letter to the CJI, the 19-year-old rape victim said that her life was threatened by alleged associates of BJP MLA Kuldeep Singh Sengar. On Sundaym her car hit by a truck killing her two aunts. She was also seriously injured. Sengar, who was already jailed for alleged rape after a truck-car collision, has also been charged with murder.

"Unfortunately, the letter has not yet surfaced, but it has been reported in the newspapers that I have read the letter as if it were not brought to his notice by 4 p.m. Tuesday," Chief Justice Ranjan Gogoi said on Wednesday. A bench of Chief Justice Ranjan Gogoi, Justice Deepak Gupta and Anirudh Bose said that the newspapers have presented as if the Chief Justice has not acted on it. The bench said the case is listed for one August. "We will do something about this situation," the bench said.

The bench made the remarks when senior advocate V Giri, who was playing the role of a friend of justice in the case of increasing incidents of child rape, requested for early listing of the Unnao rape case and the apex court had taken up the matter on Thursday. Listing for husband-wise directed the Uttar Pradesh government to submit a progress report on the accident related to the victim of the Unnao rape case. In the case, doctors say, "The victim's condition improved slightly on Wednesday but she remained unconscious and was put on a ventilator."
