I was Detained at the Lucknow airport - Akhilesh Yadav

Former Uttar Pradesh chief minister and Samajwadi Party chief, Akhilesh Yadav today tweeted that he was "detained" at the Lucknow airport. He said he was stopped by the police from boarding the flight. He was set to board the flight to go to Prayagraj city, which is 200KM from State's capital. Mr. Yadav was planning to visit Allahabad University to attend the oath-taking ceremony of the students' union.

Photos tweeted by Mr. Yadav from the Lucknow airport show a police officer standing at the stairs of the aircraft, blocking the path to board. In another photograph, Akhilesh Yadav can be seen arguing with a police officer.

"The government is afraid of oath-taking ceremony of a student leader and is stopping me at the airport to prevent me from visiting Allahabad," Mr. Yadav said.

"The police's job is to ensure that law and order are not disturbed and that any action is taken to see to this," Allahabad police officer Nitin Tiwari," said when asked about the incident.
