Oppo launches new R&D center in Hyderabad, More Jobs to come

Hyderabad, December 15: Popular Mobile company Oppo has today inaugurated its first Indian Research and Development (R&D) center at Hyderabad, Telangana. This is Oppo’s fourth R&D center globally, and the largest outside China.



Coming to detailes, At the inauguration, it was revealed that in the first 6-12 months, the focus of the new R&D center will be to get deeper insights into the behaviour of Indian consumers. Based on these findings, the center will be looking at bringing more localized innovations and customized product offerings.

Most of the solutions will be software-based in areas like Artificial Intelligence (AI), cameras, charging, and 5G.

While Speaking at the event, Tasleem Arif, Vice President and R&D Head, Oppo India said that the earliest we could see a smartphone featuring solutions developed in India is 2019.

Arif further mentioned that the R&D center will be contributing in products beyond just smartphones. It will also be looking at products like smartwatches, and Internet of Things (IoT). It is also looking at providing a platform for startups to build a local ecosystem.

The center in India has been set up as a part of Oppo’s global investment of RMB 10 billion in research and development for 2019. The Hyderabad center currently employs 50 developers, and 50 quality testers. In the coming 3-5 years, the company is looking to hire around 500 engineers from IITs for the center.

A recent report by Counterpoint Technology Market Research revealed that Oppo is now the fifth-biggest smartphone company in India. With a market share of 8 percent, the company is currently trailing Xiaomi, Samsung, Vivo, and Micromax.
