AP wants Krishna water

Hyderabad February 15: AP wants Krishna water to be released because they are losing Valuable crop and yield. The Andhra Pradesh Government has appraised the A.K. Bajaj Committee about the "defiant" attitude of Telangana in following the orders issued by the Krishna River Management Board (KRMB).

The expert committee, constituted by the Union government to prepare a manual on Operating Rules and Procedures in respect of common projects located on river Krishna for Andhra Pradesh and Telangana, heard Andhra Pradesh’s version here on Tuesday. The committee met officials of Telangana on Monday.

A.P. Water Resources Secretary Shashi Bhushan Kumar, in a presentation to the committee, said Andhra Pradesh was “witnessing” delay in releases of water by authorities in Telangana for the past two years from Nagarjuna Sagar Dam (NSD) despite clear orders by the KRMB.

The Secretary explained to the committee that Andhra Pradesh was losing valuable crop and yield as the quantity of water allocated was not being released in time.

Currently, the operation of NSD was with Telangana and the “release orders issued by KRMB are not implemented in time. Head Regulators and offtakes of the Common Reservoirs of Srisailam and Nagarjuna Sagar Projects fall in the territories of Andhra Pradesh and Telangana, and they are being operated and maintained by the respective States,” he explained.

The immediate need for fixing of KRMB jurisdiction, to enable it to exercise authority over water management in the two States, was stressed.
