Gang of power wire thieves arrested

Ghaziabad, Dec 22 : Four electric wire thieves were arrested here and electric wire, measuring nearly a km in length, recovered from them, police said on Thursday.

Addressing a press conference here, Ghaziabad Senior Superintendent of Police Deepak Kumar said acting on a tip off, a team from the Kavi Nagar police station on Wednesday night raided an abandoned house in the area. Four persons there opened fire at the police team and tried to flee but were overpowered and apprehended.

On interrogation, they confessed their crime and identified themselves as Feroz, Mohit, Yogendra and Chhotu, residents of Hapur and Bulandshahr.

Police recovered the section of wire worth over a lakh of rupees along with two home-made pistols, two knives and tools to cut the wire.

The arrested were found to have 11 cases registered against them in various police stations of Ghaziabad, Meerut and Etah districts.

"We have decided to book them under National Security Act in addition to the regular sections of IPC since wire theft is a serious offence," the SSP added.
