AP CM about Somnath Chatterjee

Hyderabad, Aug 13: Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu mourned the demise of former Speaker of Lok Sabha Somnath Chatterjee.

In Somnath's death, India today lost an outstanding parliamentarian, who was elected to the Lok Sabha for a record 10 terms, the Chief Minister said in a message.

"As a longstanding parliamentarian, Somnath rendered exemplary services to the nation. He strove for the uplift of the poor and the downtrodden," Naidu said.

Somnaths death left a deep void that could not be filled, he said and extended sympathies to the bereaved family.

Somnath Chatterjee was the Lok Sabha Speaker from 2004-2009 under the UPA government. After CPI(M) withdrew its support from the UPA government owing to the India-US nuclear deal Somnath Chatterjee was asked to resign as Speaker. He was expelled from the CPI(M) in 2008 after he refused to resign.

Politicians, leaders condoled the veteran leader's death.

He lost only one election in his lifetime -- to Mamata Banerjee from the Jadavpur constituency in 1984.
