Indian womens hockey team loses to Australia in semis

New Delhi, April 12: India's women's hockey team lost the match with 0-1 to defending champions Australia in a semi-final of the 21st Commonwealth Games here on Thursday.

Coming to details, Grace Stewart's 37th-minute field goal gave the hosts the win to set-up a title clash with New Zealand.

The defending champions remained offensive, restricting the play to India’s half but still could not penetrate the opposition defence as the second quarter too remained goal-less.

Australia earned their third penalty corner of the match in the third quarter but an onrushing Deep Grace Ekka foiled the attempt. Stewart broke the deadlock by tapping a high cross, straight into the Indian goal.

New Zealad beat England 2-1 via penalty shootout in the other semi-final.

However, India will play England in the bronze-medal playoff on Saturday at the Gold Coast Hockey Centre.
