HMDA approaches new plan to clean Hussain Sagar

Hyderabad, Mar 12: The Hyderabad Metropolitan Development Authority (HMDA) is now approaching private agencies to improve water quality and dissolved oxygen levels amid complaints of bad odor and pollution in Hussain Sagar.

Though the HMDA has been engaged in a long exercise to clean the lake with huge budgets from various sources, last couple of months has seen complaints on the deterioration of water quality.

The officials attribute this mainly to the inflows from Balkapur nala and Banjara nala.

According to a senior HMDA official, sewage is finding its way into the lake as the Hyderabad Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board (HMWSSB) has taken up repairs to the main trunk sewers.

These works were expected to be completed shortly and the sewage discharge will be diverted. This apart, efforts are now being made to improve water quality, especially the dissolved oxygen level, which has fallen to zero mg/l. The dissolved oxygen has to be increased to permissible levels of three mg/l, he informed.

"We have issued a notification inviting private agencies and companies to implement proven technology for arresting bad odour, algal blooms and improve the water quality," the official added.
