SC Allows Passive Euthanasia, Living Will

New Delhi Mar 9: In a major relief for Medically ill patients the Supreme Court on Friday has legal sanction to passive euthanasia and Living Will citing that a person has right to die with dignity.

The SC had also said that "A person can should not be given life support treatment if he slips into a coma against his wish. The Constitution bench has said that human beings have the right to die with dignity"the bench said will announcing the ruling.

Earlier the Centre had objected to Passive Euthansaia and living will and cited medical advancements so that people live with dignity. However, the Court had objected the center and ruled in favor of the petitioner.

A Living will is as a written document by way of which a patient can give his explicit instructions in advance about the medical treatment to be administered when he or she is terminally ill or no longer able to express informed consent.

Passive euthanasia is a condition where there is a withdrawal of medical treatment with the deliberate intention to hasten the death of a terminally-ill patient.
