Women asked to live alone in hut, during menstruation, dies

Nepal, Jan 09: Ancient procedure of keeping women out of village or home during their menstruation is still being practiced in Nepal. The practice is known as Chhaupadi.

According to a long-banned ancient Hindu practice women are banished from their homes and are made to live in a small hut alone, as they are considered impure during menstruation.

A women aged 23 was found dead on Tuesday in one such hut. Police said that Gauri Bayak (Budha) was found dead by her neighbours inside the Chhaupadi hut (menstruation hut) on Monday at Turmakhad Rural Municipality-3 in Achham district.

"The cause of her death will be known after post-mortem," deputy superintendent of police Dadhiram Neupane said.
