Railways to install Wifi Kiosks in 8500 stations

New Delhi Jan 8: In a Move to ensure that all railways get signals The Indian Railways has embarked upon a project to install Wifi Kiosks in 85000 railway stations including those in rural and remote areas.Sources said that the government would spend Rs Rs 700 crore ($110 million) in this project.

Sources said that the government has undertaken this project under Digital India scheme and nearly wifi has been provided in 216 Railway stations. Currently, 7 million passengers are utilizing free wifi at these stations.

Railway Ministry has said that "Internet access has now become an important requirement in day-to-day working and we shall be providing this facility at all railway stations in the country."

The Wi-FI facility at these stations in rural and remote areas will be offered to the local population as part of the digital makeover of rural India to promote e-governance. The free internet offered would be helpful for digital banking, Aadhaar generation, issuing government certificates, including birth and death certificates, and filing taxes and paying bills, among others.

Sources said that the project would be completed by March 2019 and Private participants and local people would also be involved in the project.
