Swacch Bharath -A mission in progress

Swacch Bharath a cleanliness campaign to keep the country clean was launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Oct 2, 2014, on the birth anniversary of the Mahatma Gandhi.

PM has given a message that "the campaign should be a mass movement and all people must be involved to achieve dreams of a clean country when we celebrate the 150 birthday of the father of the nation i.e 2 Oct 2019".

The campaign started slowly but has picked up momentum and It has an impact on several sectors. Currently, 3 years have passed lets review how the campaign has progressed.

Mindset Change: The main aim of the mission is to inculcate a civic sense among the people so that they don't defecate in open and stay healthy. Many states have done a significant work and currently, 7 States and union territories have been declared ODF. 230 districts have been declared ODF and 2.7 Lakh villages have been declared ODF.

Many people have started using toilets and women have expressed happiness and so many positive stories about how women themselves came forward for construction of toilets.

Urban bodies: Currently cities face a problem of lack of dustbins and also people throw garbage out open. However the clean city award competition has ensured that many cities compete and as a process, many cities have established dustbins, allocated funds for waste segregation and also many Startups and other organizations have established units to convert waste into wealth.

Tourism sector: As a part of this campaign many historic sites which were allocated meager funds earlier received huge allocations and this resulted in maintenance of the sites and many tourists flow has increased according to recent surveys.

However, a considerable progress has been made still a lot needs to be done especially in the construction of public toilets in cities and also schools especially for girls and also the urban developmental bodies needs states support and some states awareness has to be increased so that the mission would achieve the goals.
