Rasgulla Gets GI tag from Bengal

Kolkata Nov 15: A Legal Battle for Geographical Indication (GI) Tag for rasgulla between Odisha and WestBengal has come to an end and the delicious dish belongs to West Bengal.

According to World Intellectual Property Organisation "A GI Tag is a sign used on products that have a specific geographical origin and possess qualities or a reputation that are due to that origin."

The GI tag helps the local traders, manufacturers, and farmers to protect that product,/good and ensures that the heritage of a city or place is protected.

Earlier Both Odisha has claimed that the dish was originated in the state and fought a legal battle, however, West Bengal government objected the claims.

Finally, the court has given the verdict in the favor of West Bengal.CM Mamta Banerjee has tweeted that "Sweet news for us all. We are very happy and proud that Bengal has been granted GI ( Geographical Indication) status for Rosogolla".

Recently Bangineppally Mangos have got GI tag, Darjeeling tea, Madhubani paintings, Kashmir pashmina and Nagpur oranges, Mysore silk, Pochampally Ikat have got GI tag.
