Iron Man of India-Sardar Vallabhbai Patel

So many patriots sacrificed their precious lives, properties for the sake of Independence of India from the colonial rule of Britain. Of them, Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel had the opportunity and luck to sacrifice his professional opportunities.He has availed his services during independence movement and as a Home Minister of India after the country achieved freedom.

With more than 500 provinces in the country and each having their own aspirations, these lords of provinces were brought on line to merge with Indian Government by the efforts of Patel. They were given privy purses a reward for merging the provinces in the country.

At that juncture, Junagadh, Hyderabad, Kashmir , Travancore were reluctant to join India and wanted to continue as independent provinces.Somehow Junagadh and travancore was brought into the fold of India by the home minister.

The Hyderabad Nizam preferred to merge with Pakistan though there was no land or sea connection and later it was merged with India after military stepped in and the Nizam surrendered.The strategy adopted by him got laurels and he was named Sardar.



His name became popular in every household because of his courage shown.His administrative skills in moulding the Indian Administrative Services (IAS) bestowed "Iron man of India". Many leaders such as Mahatma Gandhi, Jawaharlal Nehru, and foreign leaders have praised him for his outstanding contributions for the country.

In order to recollect his legacy and to maintain the spirit he has shown for unifying the country the Present Government has officially started celebrating Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel birthday as 'Rashtriya Ekta Diwas'(National Unity Day) and a special marathon 'Run for Unity' would be conducted.
