Mamata Banerjee government plea against Aadhaar linking

A bench of Supreme Court comprising Justices AK Sikri and Ashok Bhushan will hear Mamata Banerjee-led government’s plea. Mamata Banerjee government’s plea challenges the Centre’s move to make Aadhaar card mandatory to avail social welfare schemes on October 30.

Senior advocate and member of parliament Kalyan Banerjee said that the plea was filed earlier and the bench would hear it on Monday, October 30. He told hat the West Bengal had challenged the Centre’s provision which said that nobody would be able to avail social welfare schemes without an Aadhaar card number.

Earlier on October 25, the Centre had told the apex court that the deadline has been extended till March 31, 2018, for the people who still do not have an Aadhaar number. The people who do not have the 12-digit biometric identification number will have to get an Aadhaar number by March 31 if they want to make use of the social welfare schemes.
