Farmers bury themselves till neck; two women got heart stroke

Rajasthan: In a unique form of Protest launched by Ninder Bachao Kisan Yuva Samiti (NBKYS), the farmers of Rajasthan’s Ninder village buried themsleves in land till neck deep to protest against their land acquisition by the Jaipur Development Authority (JDA).

During the ‘zameen samadhi satyagraha’ more than 50 farmers buried themselves in pits among them two women Shanti Devi and Manni Devi collapsed of heart stroke. They have demanded the government to cancel the acquisition of 400 out of the 1300 bighas of land which were earmarked for a housing project in 2011.

NBKYS president Nagendra Singh said there is “no question on compromising on their demands”. “After meeting Urban Development and Housing Minister Shrichand Kriplani, we proposed to the JDA Commissioner that a fresh land survey be conducted with specific points in mind. The JDA has asked for a day’s time to discuss the issue before taking a decision,” he added.
