20 killed in Las Vegas shooting

Las Vegas, Oct 2: At least 20 people were killed and over 100 others injured when a "lone attacker" opened fire at a music festival here, police said on Monday.

The news was confirmed by Las Vegas Metro Police Sheriff Joseph Lombardo in a press conference, reports CNN.

Lombardo also said that the "lone wolf" perpetrator was also killed without giving further details.

The shooting took place at 10.30 p.m. on Sunday in the Route 91 Harvest festival near the Mandalay Bay Casino on the city's Strip.

A video posted on Twitter showed the shooting outside the casino. Sounds similar to automatic gunfire could be heard, as well as the screaming of the crowd.

A witness told CNN he saw "ambulances" arrive in the wake of the shooting and "people were running everywhere inside the casino".

"We met someone at the gas station, a nurse, she was at the concert and she treated someone who was shot in the face, someone who was shot in the chest and someone who was shot in the liver."

Several off-duty officers from Bakersfield Police Department witnessed the shooting and one was injured.

The Las Vegas Police Department announced that they were not looking for additional shooters at this time.

Facebook has initiated its Safety Check feature for "the violent incident in Las Vegas, Nevada", so people in the area can tell their friends and relatives they are safe.

Limited flight activity resumed at the city's McCarran International Airport after services were temporarily suspended.
