Durga Puja:Police permission needed for idol immersion on Muharram

Calcutta high court order which has put a hold on guidelines restricting idol immersion on Muharram, was not challenged by West Bengal government. But the later has decided that police permission will be necessary for idol immersion on Muhararam.

The local police may deny the permission if it felt that communal harmony would be disturbed, said State director general of police Surajit Kar Purakayastha.

“The police will evaluate the safety aspects involved with the procession and immersion and take a final call on whether to accept or reject the application,” Purakayastha added.
