6 arrested for impersonating as IT officers

New Delhi, Sep 18: Six persons impersonating as Income Tax officers, who came for raiding a businessman's residence in south Delhi, were on Sunday beaten up by an angry mob before being handed over to the police for extorting Rs 20 lakh.

Police said the incident occurred around 12 noon when the accused persons barged into the businessman's house in Malviya Nagar posing as senior IT officers and asked to search the premises.

The accused have been identified as Mitesh Kumar, Naunhyal (45), Yogesh Kumar (32), Govind Sharma (45), Amit Aggarwal (35) and driver, Parvinder (21) and were arrested from the spot. Another associate, identified as Kailash, managed to escape, police said.

"During their fake raid, Mitesh Kumar introduced himself as Assistant Commissioner of Income Tax and extorted Rs 20 lakh from the businessman, while his associates kept the money in car. The family later indulged into a feud with the men as they demanded money, following which they raised alarm and people in the neighbourhood gathered and started beating the six," Additional Deputy Commissioner Chinmoy Biswal said.

"They thrashed them and later police was called as the feud grew. While investigating the matter, the police teams discovered that all the six were posing as fake IT officers," Biswal added.

The extorted money was also recovered from their possession, Biswal added.
