Make Indian cities and towns safe for women

Hyderabad, July 01: In order to make Indian cities and towns safe for women, The Cops and civil society members called for greater effort.

Speaking at a one-day consultation meet held here on Friday, the speakers addressed various aspects of women's safety. While much has been achieved, more needs to be done as tales of harassment and assault on women continue to be reported from across the country.

While discussing hurdles to make public and work places safe for women, the emphasis was laid on recognizing online threats.

As the Minister tasked with ensuring law and order in Telangana, Home Minister Nayini Narasimha Reddy, who was the chief guest at the event, termed atrocities against women as 'unfortunate' and called them a deterrent to the nation’s progress.

Telangana Director General of Police Anurag Sharma said most cases of harassment happen in family circles and parents of the victims seek to cover it up. "The message we give women is to come out and speak. Only then can action be taken," he said adding that SHE Teams and Bharosa integrated center, give victims of harassment and sexual assault the confidence to complain.
