ITI institutes yet to be turned into formal schools

New Delhi, May 22: Here the Ministry of Human Resources revealed that It has planning to convert the Industrial Training Institutes(ITI) into formal schools here on Sunday.

In a move which will benefit about 20 lakh students studying in Industrial Training Institutes (ITIs) across the country, the government is mulling to develop these institutes into formal schools like those affiliated to CBSE and ICSE. The move will enable the ITI graduates to pursue regular courses in schools and colleges.

Officials said a proposal in this regard, which was mooted by the Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship, has been accepted by the HRD Ministry. According to an estimate, over 20 lakh students pass out from over 13,000 ITIs every year.

A senior HRD Ministry official said a separate board on the lines of CBSE and ICSE will be set up which will award certificates on a par with those given to students clearing Class X and XII from regular boards.

This will help ITI graduates to pursue regular courses in other schools and colleges, added the official.

Once the proposal is formalized, the National Council for Vocational Training will be authorized to conduct exams and issue certificates for Class X and XII for the ITI students.
