Delhi MAY 17: The Centre had submitted an affidavit to Supreme Court stating that it was committed to freedom of choice and the right to privacy of citizens.

The center had submitted its response when a case relating to privacy issues of the Whatsapp messenger.

The government had also said that we are in the process of bringing a regulatory framework for the data protection.

ASG said that we would either frame a statutory rule or issue executive guidelines, which would be applicable to all companies, on data protection.

Additional Solicitor General (ASG) Tushar Mehta told the bench that
"the process on this issue in final stages and we will issue detailed instructions once the policy is framed."

Finally, the court has asked the government " what would be the role of ours when citizens feel that their privacy is affected because of lack of regulatory mechanism?".

The government replied that it is a sensitive issue as it involves privacy of people and made a suggestion that court can order any private company to follow the orders when the matter is in favor of larger public interest.

Let's hope that Centre will soon bring a policy on data protection.
