President Pranab inaugurated OU centenary Celebrations

Hyderabad, April 26: The President Pranab Mukherjee on Wednesday formally inaugurated the three-day festivities of the Osmania University Centenary.

Governor ESL Narasimhan, Chief Minister K Chandrashekhar Rao and a host of other dignitaries were present on the occasion.

Earlier, the celebrations started with colourful Telangana-themed cultural songs and dances, at the main venue of A Grounds in the campus. The special attraction was Bathukamma, Telangana 'dhol', centenary song and 'Sare Jahan Se Acha' sung by 100 singers of the Department of Culture.

During the inauguration, the President said the Nizam had a dream of establishing a world standard institution of higher learning in Hyderabad.

He said the university witnessed momentous changes in these 100 years, including the two world wars, India's independence and formation of Telangana.



He futher said that, The Osmania University was established with the dream that it will be a place where free minds will meet, they will freely exchange ideas and views and that all will live in peaceful co-existence.

Pranab voiced concern that Indian universities were lagging far behind in basic research and innovation.

Students, faculty, non-teaching staff, alumni, MPs, MLAs and MLCs were present in large numbers. Meanwhile, the university administration and police made elaborate arrangements for the three-day inaugural ceremony.
