Why aadhar links PAN?

New Delhi, April 22: The Supreme Court(SC) has questioned the central government, why it made the Aadhaar card mandatory for getting a PAN card when the top court passed an order saying it couldn't do that.

Late last month, the SC did say the government wouldn't be wrong to make Aadhaar mandatory for opening bank accounts, getting mobile connections and getting passports. But among those things, the Supreme Court did not include getting PAN cards or getting welfare benefits.

Making the Aadhaar compulsory is its "only option", said the Attorney General (AG), who's representing the Centre, to the SC.

"We have found many of PAN cards being used to divert funds to shell companies. To prevent the only option is to make Aadhaar card mandatory," the AG told the apex court.
