Mass Wedding event at Nuvvularevu

Srikakulam, March 06: Nuvvularevu Village has been turned into a venue of mass wedding event, which is held in Vajrapu Kothuru Mandal of Srikakulam District on Sunday.In the Village, Nearly 100 couples had participated in a mass marriage event at 11:40 Pm as a Muhurtham.From the morning onwards, In every house brightening with marriage atmosphere along with relatives, band mela orchestra etc. The villagers have been prayed and submitted the different food items to their worshiped goddess Brundavathi Matha(Tulasi Mata).After that, Wedding works had started with themselves.The procession of bride and groom also conducted. The total event was decorated with flowers and lights. In this Mandal, marriages are always between the local men and women and no dowry or any form of monetary exchange is allowed between families. This rule was made by the village elders almost a century ago.They had come up with this rule after coming across incidents of domestic violence and dowry tortures in marriages between inter-village couples.The villagers fix an auspicious muhurtam every three years for the mass marriage and people from across the district visit the village to witness the event.District officials collector Laxmi Narasimham and SP Brahma Reddy had attended the event as Chief guests.Speaking to media, The sarpanch of Nuvvularevu village Behara Dharma Rao said that, "We don t take dowry. It keeps up away from several social evils.The most of the villagers are from the neighboring state of Odisha and belong to the Kevati community. Nearly 10,000 people reside in the village and worship Tulasi matha.
