Atomic Power Plant proposal is rejected in Srikakulam

Visakhapatnam, February 5: The proposal of an atomic power plant is opposed by the all public s organizations in the city at Kovvada in Srikakulam district.While Speaking to the media here on Saturday, convenor of the Forum for Better Visakha and former Energy Secretary EAS Sarma said that several intellectuals, nuclear scientists and environmental experts were opposing the atomic power plant as it was very hazardous.Originally, It was proposed to be set up in Gujarat, but as the people there opposed it, it was shifted to Andhra Pradesh, he pointed out.An atomic power plant was akin to a huge atom bomb. Effluents released from the plant such as tritium, strontium, and plutonium were dangerous chemicals, which could be hazardous to the health of people, general secretary of the Forum for Development of North Andhra, A. Aja Sarma, said.Meanwhile, leader of People for India Forum N Ramanachalam decried the announcement made in Parliament on Friday by Union Minister of State for Atomic Energy Jitendra Singh that two atomic power plants would be set up in Andhra Pradesh at Kovvada and Kavali.
