Opposition parties restricted Triple Talak bill in Rajya Sabha

New Delhi, December 31: A united Opposition on Monday defeated the government’s attempt to pass the Muslim Women Bill, which illegalizes instant Triple Talaq, in the Rajya Sabha, exhausting that it be sent to a Select Committee.



The updated Bill, which was passed in the Lok Sabha three days ago, was expected to face resistance in the Rajya Sabha where the ruling portion does not enjoy a majority and with AIADMK MPs also signaling their opposition.

The Upper House was delayed till 2 pm after AIADMK members disrupted proceedings and trooped into the well raising the Cauvery issue and shouting idiom “We want Justice”.

After the triple talaq bill was tabled upon restoration of House proceedings, Leader of Opposition in the Rajya Sabha Ghulam Nabi Azad said the bill required further review and claimed that more than half of the members belonging to several parties have demanded that it be sent to a select committee.
