Miracle newborns survive all odds

Visakhapatnam, Nov 19: Extremely premature twins, born in My Cure Hospital in Visakhapatnam on June 11 have survived despite the odds stacked against them. They were born by Caesarian section and weighed 440 grams and 650 grams.

The mother had conceived through in vitro fertilisation (IVF) in London. The procedure was carried out by Dr Chandra Reddy. When her membranes ruptured, the pregnancy could not be continued.

The couple were guided to consult D. Sai Sunil Kishore of MyCure Hospital in Vizag city for neonatology support. The chances of survival for such micro preemies are minimal at best, even by western standards.

After the birth, one of the twins was in an extremely critical state. “His lungs and other organs were functionally immature, the baby’s development was stunted, and he was prone to severe infections and had extremely low immunity,” said Dr Sai Sunil Kishore for whom this has been one of the most complicated cases he has handled.

The baby required at least four weeks of invasive and non-invasive ventilation, intravenous nutrition for three weeks and extreme gentle and aseptic care to ensure proper development.

He was discharged on September 28 in a healthy condition with a weight of 1.6 kg, was taking feeds well, and had normal vision and normal brain function. The other twin was discharged earlier, also in an absolutely healthy condition.

The survival of the twins is being considered a true miracle by the family. The mother Madhuri said it was the doctor’s continuous reassurance and his positivity that got them through two very tough months.
