Telangana stands in 2nd place

Hyderabad, March 15: Telangana JAC Chairman Prof M Kodandaram on Tuesday angered on the ruling party for not giving any funds for farmers who are committed suicide in draft situations.

He further demanded that the government create a separate fund in the budget for market intervention to help farmers.

The TJAC chairman was speaking at a meeting organized on the problems of farmers organized by Rythu JAC here at Sundaraiah Vignana Kendram.

Prof Kodandaram pointed out that the government remained a mute spectator when the prices of agriculture produce crashed.

The Karnataka government had earmarked Rs 450 crore for market intervention, he said. The farmers are in distress in the State, leading to 2,700 of them committing suicide.

Telangana State stood second in terms of farmer suicides in the country. The government has failed to establish a mechanism to help the farmers in distress and ensure that they get minimum support price for their produce. The government was taking away lands of the farmers in the name of projects, he said.

Kodandaram said the Rythu JAC was formed with 24 members and he would be on the committee as a member. The district committees would be formed by April.

Rythu JAC leader Jalapati Rai said there was no point in giving power when there was no water. He alleged that the agriculture universities are not functioning properly.

The Centre too had expressed its helplessness on providing the minimum support price for agriculture produce. He demanded that the State government announce the bonus for the farmers.
