Constable tries for guinness record & finally dead

Vijayawada January 22: In a tragic incident while trying for a Guinness record, a Special Protection Force (SPF) head constable in Vijayawada died of cardiac arrest while swimming in the river Krishna.

Doctors say constable Umamaheswara Rao (44) got a massive stroke a few minutes before reaching the shore on the other end and collapsed in the water.

Two professional swimmers, who were accompanying him on either side in the water, noticed him drowning and tried to rescue him. But, by the time he was rushed to the nearest hospital, he breathed his last. Doctors declared him brought dead.

The tragedy took place in Vijayawada city. He got into the river at VIP Ghat opposite Kanaka Durga temple and was to reach the other side at Tadepalli, swimming about 7 kilometers.

Umamaheswara Rao, who is survived by a wife and two children, had earlier many records to his credit. He now had set Guinness to record his target and was preparing for the January 27 demonstration. His rehearsals were going on in the river Krishna.

On Sunday morning, he got into the river with gunny bags tied to his legs and holding the National Flag in hands.

A native of Oleru village in Bhattiprolu of Guntur district, Rao joined the SPF as constable in 1994.

He had earlier achieved several records including an entry in Limca Book of Records, Telugu Book of Records and India Book of Records in swimming with legs and hands tied.

Fellow cops said Umamaheswara Rao had been swimming for the last 15 years. He announced his Guinness goal in 2014 and had been preparing for two hours every day.
