Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi, also known as Mahatma Gandhi, was a prominent political and spiritual leader of India and the Indian freedom movement. He was the leader of countermeasures against atrocities through Satyagraha (widespread civil disobedience), the foundation of his concept was laid on the principle of total non-violence which inspired India to fight for the civil rights and freedom of the people all over the world. In Sanskrit, the Mahatma or the great soul is a respectful word. Gandhi was first addressed by Rajvaidya Jivaram Kalidas in 1915 in the name of Mahatma.

Swami Shwaranind was another person who honoured Bapu with the title of Mahatma in 1915, Guru Rabindranath Tagore conferred him with the title of Mahatma, in one of his articles on 12th April 1919. The first person to address Bapu to Gandhiji was a disciple of his Sabarmati Ashram, Subhash Chandra Bose, in a broadcast released by Rangoon Radio on July 6, 1944, to Gandhiji's name, addressing him as the father of the nation and seeking his blessings and good wishes for the soldiers of the Azad Hind Fauj. 2nd October every year is observed as Gandhi Jayanti in India and international Day of Non-violence all over the world.

Gandhiji began to do satyagraha for the civil rights of the Indian community in South Africa as an expatriate lawyer. He returned to India in 1915. Thereafter, he united the farmers, labourers to raise their voice against excessive land-tax and discrimination. After assuming the reins of the Indian National Congress in 1921, he launched a number of programmes to eradicate poverty across the country, expand women's rights, builds religious and ethnic unity and oppose untouchability for self-sufficiency. Gandhiji has fought for the freedom of our nation.
