There were a total of 22 deaths in road accidents in the city last month. The traffic police carried out an analysis of the accidents was to understand the reasons why they occurred, and take remedial measures.

Out of 22 fatal accidents, five cases were of the hit-and-run type where the accused vehicle was not identified. One accident was attributed to a two-wheeler rider trying to avoid a dog on the road. Six drivers involved in fatal accidents were found to be driving drunk. Three drivers were speeding. In the remaining cases, the drivers were driving in a rash manner.

The survey revealed among those killed by other vehicles was a motorcyclist and eight pedestrians. Out the 14 accidents involving motorcycle riders, 12 were not wearing helmets.

Mr Anil Kumar, additional commissioner, traffic, said, "Our analysis reveals that speeding was the major reason for fatal accidents. Motorcyclists and pedestrians are the most vulnerable group. Non-compliance of the helmet rule is main reason for death of motorcyclists".

Speaking to Deccan Chronicle, Mr Kumar advised motorists to avoid speeding and drive under permitted speed limits to reduce accidents.
