AP Police alerts TDP leaders

Anantapur, Oct 08: Andhra Pradesh Police has sounded alert about the possibility of Maoist attacks on few leaders of Telugu Desam, who are on their hit list for the past two decades. Sources in the police department revealed that a legislator from Hindupur and brother of an MLC were targets of the Maoists in Anantapur district.

In view of the recent murder of Araku MLA Kidari Sarweswar Rao and former Araku MLA Siveri Soma in Araku valley in Visakhapatnam District, the police has sensed presence of a group of Maoists in shelter zones of Rayalaseema who were likely to make more hits to make their presence felt.

A senior leader and brother of an MLC has been in the hit list of the Maoists for more than three decades over land distribution issues. Earlier, Maoist activities were confined to a few pockets of AP and TS while they were widely spread in Odissa and Chattisgarh.

Earlier, Anantapur has been a strong base of various Maoist groups which were also active in Karnataka s bordering districts. While the splinter groups were wiped out in police action, the main wing suffered a severe jolt due to series of encounters at the hills in Anantapur and Nallamala forests. Sources said the Maoists wanted to revamp activities again and were targeting political leaders who were in the hit list for resisting their activities in Anantapur district a decade ago.

A police official from the region said the department has been alerted over possible rise of activities in Nallamala forest and other shelter zones.
