Karunanidhi Final Journey begins

Chennai, Aug 07: DMK leader M Karunanidhi, who died on Tuesday after a long illness, will be buried at Chennai's Marina Beach, where three other former chief ministers including J Jayalalithaa have memorials.

DMK patriarch and five-time Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M Karunanidhi breathed his last at Kauvery hospital in Chennai on Tuesday. He was 94.

The final journey of the late DMK President M. Karunanidhi has begins from the Rajaji Hall where the body is lying in state for people to pay homage.

A number of politicians, including Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and Rajinikanth, dropped by at the Gopalapuram residence of the DMK patriarch to pay their respects. DMK supporters throng Marina Beach Even as thousands of supporters thronged Chennai to catch a last glimpse of their beloved leader, an unwanted controversy over the burial place broke out.

A petition in the Madras High Court was filed seeking a directive to the TN government to allow a burial place at the Marina Beach, where leaders such as Annadurai, M G Ramachandran and Jayalalithaa have been laid to rest.

The final journey of the late DMK President M. Karunanidhi will start at 4 p.m. from the Rajaji Hall where the body is lying in state for people to pay homage.

In a statement, the party said the vehicle carrying Karunanidhi's body will reach Anna Square via Wallajah Road covering a distance of less than 3 km.

The party has appealed to its cadres and general public to keep calm and maintain peace during the final journey.
