Chennai, Aug 07: Former Tamil Nadu chief minister M Karunanidhi's health condition has declined, the hospital treating him in Chennai said on Monday, adding that maintaining his vital organ functions continued to be a challenge due to his age.

The DMK chief's response to "medical interventions over the next 24 hours" will determine his prognosis", Dr Aravindan Selvaraj, executive director, Kauvery Hospital, Chennai said in a health bulletin.

In this regard, As an overwhelming number of DMK cadres are gathered outside are waiting for the news of good health of the DMK supremo, police are trying to control them as the crowd is raising slogans.

Devi and Woodland theatres near the Kauvery Hospital in Alwarpet have cancelled the night shows as Karunanidhi remains critical.

The 94-year-old five-time Tamil Nadu chief minister was being continuously monitored and treated with active medical support, a press release issued by the hospital said.

Soon after the news of a decline in Karunanidhi's condition spread, hundreds of his supporters gathered outside the hospital, including a large number of women, some failing to control their tears, others waving at the TV cameras, preparing for an overnight vigil at the facility in downtown Alwarpet.
