Nationwide transport strike: Cabs, buses,autos off the Roads

New Delhi, Aug 7: The nationwide transport strike announced by the All India Motor Transport Organisation is likely to cripple normal life in several states on Tuesday.

The workers have decided to strike work against the "retrograde provisions" of the Motor Vehicles Amendment Bill as well as the continuous rise in the prices of petroleum products. Others have also demanded toll-free movement on highways and a reduction in third-party insurance premium paid through exemption of GST on TPP.

This is the second time that the road transport unions are holding a nationwide agitation against the proposed amendments. While only private taxi operators, including Ola and Uber, will participate in the strike in Karnataka, Kerala has decided to support the call wholeheartedly.

Karnataka Some autorickshaw and cab driver unions have decided to stay off the road from 6am to 6pm. Government-run Bangalore Metropolitan Transport Corporation, Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation and Namma Metro will operate as usual KSRTC Staff and Workers' Federation, backed by All India Trade Union Congress, is not participating in the strike.

Schools to remain open Schools and colleges, despite unconfirmed reports earlier, are likely to remain open through the day. Kerala Vehicles, including private buses, auto rickshaws, taxis, freight vehicles and most of the Kerala State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC) buses, will stay off the roads.

In Andhra Pradesh, TSRTC (Telangana State Road Transport Corporation) buses and autos are supporting the Motor vehicle strike and will halt their services. All the unions in TSRTC, auto unions, drivers' association have supported the strike call given by the All-India Coordination Committee of Road Transport Workers Organisations.
