Rajinikanth announces ex-gratia for Thoothukkudhi victims

Chennai, May 30: The actor turned politician, Superstar Rajinikanth on Wednesday visited a general hospital in Thoothukkudhi as a "goodwill gesture" to meet people who got injured during the anti-Sterlite protests.

After meeting the injured in a hospital, Rajinikanth announced Rs.2 lakh rupees each for the kin of victims who died in the protest.

He also criticised the Tamil Nadu government over the incident as media quoted him saying that "I don't want to comment more on it, but the Government needs to be careful as the people are watching."

He added, "it was a huge mistake and a big lesson. I announce Rs 2 lakhs each for the kin of victims who died in the protest", media reported.

As many as 13 people lost their lives in an anti-Sterlite protest which turned violent after a clash broke out between the protestors and the local police.

The locals were protesting for the closure of the factory for 99 days when the protests took a violent turn on May 22, the 100th day of their stir.

On Monday the government directed the permanent closure of the Sterlite copper smelting plant in Thoothukudi.

Meanwhile, the anti-Sterlite protest case has been transferred to crime branch CID after an order by the Tamil Nadu's director general of police, TK Rajendran.
