Pay bills & get more power supply

Chandigarh, Dec 13 : Villages in Haryana can enjoy power supply for longer hours if residents install electricity meters at all village houses, not indulge in power theft and regularly pay bills.

"Power will be supplied for 15, 21 and 24 hours every day to such villages which install electricity meters outside all houses, not indulge in power theft, regularly pay electricity bills, and where line losses range between 8 and 10 per cent," Uttar and Dakshin Haryana Bijli Vitran Nigams Chairman Shatrujeet Singh Kapoor announced on Monday.

Haryana has been trying out various incentives, including a Rs 1,600 crore power bills waiver in 2005, to get people, especially in rural areas, to install meters and pay bills regularly.

In the rural areas, about 60 per cent people get electricity bill at the minimum rate of only Rs 1,296 for a year, and, on an average, only 10 per cent people are paying bills, a spokesman for the distribution companies said.

To ensure that people comply with its conditions, the state government has made it mandatory for people to get a 'no-objection certificate' from the Power Department for various government services such as passing of maps, issuing licences and others, Kapoor added.
