Dhoni finishes off in style, 7 Years for World Cup

New Delhi, Apr 02: Exact Seven years ago, on April 2, 2011, The Jharkhand Dynamite Mahendra Singh Dhoni-led India edged past Sri Lanka to lift its second ICC Cricket World Cup at the batting legend Sachin Tendulkar's home turf the Wankhede Stadium Mumbai.

It was also the first World Cup victory for Tendulkar, which he achieved in his sixth attempt.

During the chase, it was Dhoni who hit a magnificent six to chase down the target in style off a Nuwan Kulasekara delivery.

"And Dhoni finishes off in style. India lift the World Cup after 28 years", commentator Ravi Shastri said as the captain led India to the World Cup after Kapil Dev did it on the maiden occasion in the year 1983.

The event was significant for a number of reasons, some of the most relevant ones being:

It enabled a nation of a billion to finally scratch that decades-long itch. 1983 was no longer that distant ideal that India could just not replicate

Inching towards the end of what had been a stellar then-22-year-long career, Sachin Tendulkar was able to lift the World Cup. As Virat Kohli said right after the match after the team carried Sachin on a lap-of-honour, "He's carried us for years. It's nice to be able to carry him now".

It ended three World Cups-worth of Australian dominance with India doing the honours.

India defeated Pakistan in a high-stakes geopolitically significant knock-out encounter in Mohali.

MS Dhoni cemented his place as the world's best finisher as his ice-cool hammerblow delivered a coup de grĂ¢ce to a spirited Sri Lankan side and sent a billion people into raptures!
