Building workers had strong hit from demonetization

Srikakulam, Dec 9 : Construction workers in hundreds lost their subsistance from the last one month, due to the effect of demonetization. With the heavy cash crunch the construction activity in Srikakulam and Vijanagaram has stopped. Non availability of works in both the districts make the workers hard to meet their daily needs.

Ramu Naidu, a worker of sri kurmam said, ?After the steep hike in material cost, the builders have already stopped construction of new apartments. Demonetisation is another big blow. So, hardly we have been getting any work for the last one week. I can?t get work in Vizag and other places, since similar conditions are prevailing there,?. A men can earn Rs. 250 per day and women around Rs.175.

Another worker in women said, ?The government?s war against black money is good for society. But it should think of the life of labourers too,?. Many workers were in the debt trap she added. Few builders provide loans to the senior workers.

Banks said the payments would be made only through accounts. But the majority of the workers had accounts in their villages and mandals and they could not travel to their own places.

?We used to go to cities whenever there was slump in construction activity in Srikaulam and Vizianagaram. But the situation is similar in cities like Visakhapatnam and Vijayawada,? says another worker.
