Major earthquake hits  Papua New Guinea

Sydney Feb 27: A Natural disaster took place today. A major earthquake has hit the islands of Papua New Guinea at least 31 people were killed and over 300 others injured in the quake.

The Magnitude of the earthquake was recorded as 7.5 on the Richter scale. The US Geological Survey (USGS) said that "the tremor struck late Monday night at a depth of 35 km, with its center about 90 km south of Porgera, in the province of Enga.The quake was followed by several aftershocks into Tuesday morning."

Troops and rescue teams and rescue teams have been mobilized and Up to 400,000 people in four provinces of the island-nation have been affected by the quakes.

Papua New Guinea is located in the region Pacific Ring of Fire where an area of great seismic and volcanic activity that is hit by around 7,000, mostly moderate, earthquakes every year.
