Karnataka Government welcomes Cauvery verdict

New Delhi Feb 16: The Supreme Court on Friday has delivered a Key long-standing issue of Cauvery river water sharing between Karnataka and Tamilnadu states.

The court in its judgment has ordered the Karnataka government to release 177 TMC of Cauvery water to Tamilnadu and the Kannada state would get an increased allocation of 14.75 TMc water and Bengaluru city would get an additional 4.7 TMC water which would be used for drinking purposes.

The Total allocation of Karnataka is now 284.5 TMC.There were no changes in the allocation for Kerala and Puducherry. earlier Cauvery tribunal had allocated 30 TMC to Kerala and 7 TMC to Pudducherry.

Karnataka government had reacted to the judgment and State CM Siddarammiah has said that "This is a good news for farmers in Cauvery basin and people of Karnataka".

The Court had also said that " The increased allocation to Karnataka is based on the increased demand for industrial use and drinking water required for Bengaluru based on its status and the water must be utilized for the stated purposes itself".
