The Law Ministry today announced that Om Prakash Rawat has been appointed as the new Chief Election Commissioner and ex-finance secretary Ashok Lavasa has been made the election commissioner.

Both Rawat and Lavasa will take charge from January 23. Rawat will succeed AK Joti as Chief Election Commissioner after he steps down on Monday.

Rawat, an IAS officer from the 1977 batch of the Madhya Pradesh cadre, was appointed to the Election Commission two years ago.
