Around 290 members jailed for violating traffic rules

Hyderabad, Jan 21: The Third and Fourth Metropolitan Magistrate Court here at Erramanzil sentenced to imprisonment 287 persons on charges of drunk driving, while 14 persons were imprisoned for failure to pay challans and nine persons were sent to jail for driving without licenses.

The driving licenses of 16 persons were permanently canceled while licenses of 58 persons were suspended, police said here on Saturday. The court also imposed a fine of Rs 48 lakh on them.

During the period from January 1 to January 19, a total of 2,274 charge sheets were filed against drunk drivers. The court has awarded them imprisonment for periods ranging from two days to 30 days. They were shifted to the Central Prison in Chanchalguda.

Police said the violators who are caught and convicted in drunken drive cases were likely to face difficulties in securing government jobs, passport and visa clearance. They will be sent for counseling at the Traffic Training Institutes at Goshamahal and Begumpet.
