213 Railway Projects Cost Escalated by Rs 1.61 lakh crore

NewDelhi Dec 24: Currently many people believe that construction of Railways projects are delayed because some of the projects such as the construction of new lines or conversion of tracks generally take decades because of various reasons.

Recently a Report published by Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation (MOSPI) for September 2017 has indicated the same.

Currently, MOSPI monitors central sector projects envisaging an expenditure of Rs 150 crore and above each on regular basis.According to the report
# The department had monitored 353 projects
# 213 railway projects are facing total cost overrun of Rs 1.6 lakh crore
#The total original cost of these 213 projects was Rs 1,21,595.36 crore
#The total anticipated cost of these projects is estimated at Rs 2,83,482.35 crore, which indicates overall cost escalation by 133.14 per cent.
#36 railway projects reported time overrun or delay of 12 months to 261 months.

However, the department had not indicated the reasons which had led to cost overrun of the projects.
