Punjab election results: Congress wins with majority

Punjab, Dec 17: The Congress swept Punjab municipal elections 2017, while Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) could win just one Nagar Panchayat. The Congress, which won 77 seats in the 117-member Punjab Assembly in March election, bagged 27 municipal councils and Nagar Panchayats in Punjab municipal polls. Independent candidates won most of the seats in four municipal councils. The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), which won 20 seats in Assembly polls, failed to impress everywhere.

The Congress secured majority in Goraya Nagar, Rajasansi, Handiaya, Machhiwara, Amloh, Mallanwala Khas, Makhu, Bhogpur, Shahkot, Bilga, Dhilwan, Bhulath, Mullanpur Dakha, Maloud, Sahnewal, Baghapurana, Dharamkot, Panjtoor, Bariwala, Ghagga, Ghanour, Narot Jaimal Singh, Dirba, Ghanouri, Khemkaran, Talwandi Sabo and Mahilpur. Indepdent candidates won majority of seats in Cheema Nagar, Moonak, Balachaur and Bhikhi. The SAD bagged most of the seats in Begowal Nagar Panchayat.

The Congress also registered a massive victory in Amritsar, Jalandhar and Patiala Municipal Corporation.
