GST council to discuss rollout of e-way bill

New Delhi Dec 15: The GST Council would hold its 24 meeting on Saturday via video conferencing. Although the meeting was scheduled for the first week of January 2018 The council had preponed the meeting.

Sources said that the Council would discuss the early implementation of e-way bill and Invoice matching to make the system more transparent. Currently, there are reports that the tax evasion has increased in recent months as the interstate check-posts have been abolished and there is no invoice matching mechanism currently.

Finance Minister Arun Jaitley has said that "“I think Council has already taken a decision with regard to the time schedule, with regard to e-way bill itself. That will help in enhancing the collection."

The Council had decided that e-way bill — an electronic document generated on the GST Network portal — would be introduced in a staggered manner from January 1 and subsequently nation-wide from April 1.

Currently, the council believes that RS 12,000 cr has declined due to increase in tax evasion.
