This living being is not 512-yr-old

Greenland, Dec 15: Currently there are reports that scientists have discovered a 512-year- living shark but some scientists have said that such news are false and the shark may be in the range of 272 -512 years old and the highest range shouldn't be taken into consideration.

Earlier reports have emerged that Greenland sharks (Somniosus microcephalus) native to the Arctic and North Atlantic, can grow to be up to 24 feet (7 meters) long and weigh up to 2,645 pounds (1,200 kilograms) have lived up to 512 years.

The Scientists estimated the age of the animal using the radiocarbon dating to measure carbon isotopes absorbed by Greenland sharks' eye tissue and confirmed that the sharks lived up to 335 and 392 years old and not 512 years old.

Greenland Shark and Elasmobranch Education and Research Group (GEERG) has said that "The sharks are slow-moving fish, cruising at about 1 foot per second (0.3 meters/second), and reaching depths of 9,101 feet (2,774 m)." The scientist's analysis are published in Journal Science.
