Women Organization demands restriction of liquor sales

Vizag Dec 12: In a move to restrict liquor sales , Chaitanya Sravanti, a leading women's organization in the city, has made a fervent appeal to the government to come out with a policy to control liquor sales.

Talking to reporters here on Tuesday, president of Chaitanya Sravanti, Dr Shirin Rahman has suggested formulating a policy to control liquor on lines of tobacco control. "In the past, only 2 per cent of those above 21 years of age used to consume alcohol. But now, it has risen alarmingly to 22 per cent. The governments are encouraging the sale of liquor to boost their revenue. But the fact remains that more money is spent on medical and health sector due to this" she stated.

She also added that the "organization had filed a public interest litigation (PIL) in the Supreme Court seeking liquor control and it was posted for hearing on December 15."
